What is the problem with my central air conditioning unit?
Question:It gets the house cool on mild or cloudy days, late at night and in the mornings. But by noon on a hot day (90 Farenheit) it runs constantly and the house temps go up. What could be the problem?
Answers:
I am having the same problem.it is real cold in the night or in the morning but from 1 to 3 it feels like i am outside in the sun.
It could be low on refrigerant.
It could be a dirty evaporator.
It could be a dirty condensor.
It could be a plugged air filter.
Whatever it is, it's not efficient as it should be.
It is leaking freon gas and needs a recharge. If it has not been recharged in years it is time. Make sure you are very careful on who you call. One of my best friends was in A/C repair and they will sell you unneeded parts and service and were often ordered to run a screwdriver through an important part so you had to do a complete replacement. He worked for about 15 different companies and they all (All) do this so he changed to a different career. Have a husband, boyfriend, brother, father, or some other guy stand right behind them and watch them. It must be a guy because they will cheat you badly. 15 different companies over 7 states do not lie - this is an industry fraught with cheats. My sister had the same problem in her McMansion and they sold her two complete new systems $14, 800 because she is a girl and did not ask in advance. We were able to use her supposedly old and broken systems in another sister's house that did not have A/C.
Be careful. Adding freon is an easy answer but not always right. Your unit is not functioning properly for some reason. While it could be low on freon, it could also be a problem with poor airflow (dirty filter, disconnected duct work, etc.). Call in a reputable company and have them diagnose your system. The best way to find a reputable company is to ask your neighbors who they use and if they are happy. Other than that you are shooting in the dark.
