What are fuses and circut breakers used for?

Question:To prevent an overload? Open a circut when too much current is being used? They just for keeping the wires from getting overheated? All of the above? Something else?

Thank you!

Answers:
Fuses are used to protect circuits when there is too much current flowing through the circuit or if there is a short circuit to the ground. They are designed to blow when the circuit is overloaded.
A circuit beaker is differerent. When the circuit is overloaded, the circuit breaker can trip open the circuit and must be re-set. If you ever had too many appliances running on the same circuit, the circuit breaker will open. Fuses have to be replaced and circuit breakers can be re-set once all appliances are turned off. Hope this helps!

To control (off and on) the power used in zones throughout the house. If you turn on the microwave, dishwasher and dryer in my 60 amp. house...the power goes off and I have to turn off one of them after flipping the circuit breaker back on. (I just moved here). I would upgrade but it is a rental.
All of the above. And also to protect life and property.
beside to keep the wires from overheating. it also used to isolate the defected circuits and protect the fuse from blasting due to short circuit current.
