Philco Air Conditioner?
Question:Anyone know anything about Philco Air Conditioners? My a/c died and one contractor is trying to sell me a Philco 3 ton unit at a very low price and I just wanted to see if anyone had any opinions?
Answers:
Wow, I have never heard of a Philco central A/C unit.
When I bought two systems for my home I considered a few things:
-Efficiency
-Availability of Parts
-Type of parts/technology (Generic or proprietary?)
-Reliability rating/Mean time before failure average
-Cost
I settled on Rheem as it fit all my needs and utilizes a Scroll type compressor which is quiet, efficient and relatively inexpensive.
Perhaps you can research Philco on the points I mentioned.
Also, remember that some units use Generic / "off the shelf" parts that are more easily obtained and much less expensive. When it's an hour before that big party and 110 degrees outside...on a Saturday... you'll know why I think this is important.
Good luck!
depends on the size of your house, and what is really wrong, a 3 ton is for a little house and I would go Carrier for a new unit.
but lets fix the old unit, what is wrong, lets say the compressor hums but the fan wont turn, will it start up if you spin the fan? if the fan will spin after you help it, then the starting cap is bad,
if the compressor doesnt come on, then check the voltage at the pins on the side of the compressor with a " wiggy" a spring loaded tool for measuring Voltage and not getting hurt,
if there isnt anything happening it could be the thermostat, call another AC person,
