I have been hearing a thumping sound in the house, so i went to the basement?

Question:and the meter and the pipes connected to it were shaking alot. It happens quite a few times a day. what could this be from?

Answers:
Sounds like very old water pipes to me. I have heard stories about old water lines in homes making loud and even scary noises. Probably because they are metal pipes whereas today they use PVC which if they happen to clang together, it doesn't make the sound as metal pipes do when hitting against one another. I would say the water rushing through old clogged up pipes causes it to do this, like rust build up and so on. Probably not much room for the water to flow through on top of the water pressure coming through the pipes, so it is fighting its way through the water lines.

Maybe a mini earthquake or Sub Woofers on too loud?
Air and pressure in the pipes you can buy a pressure relief valve to stop this ~~
could be expansion and contraction of hot water pipes, try this, turn on hot water faucet longest distance from water heater, let run 2 minutes after water is hot, turn off, do you hear noise? Some pressure reducing valves start making noises when old and when any water is turned on or off. Some fill valves in toilets will make pipes rattle when tank is close to being full.
See if this "thumping/shaking" happens after flushing the toilet. A lot of times the valve in the toilet is old and slow to fill the tank. You can sometimes feel this by holding on to the pipe going to the tank behind the toilet after flushing.. It will vibrate a little. If that is your source, replace the fill valve, and the shutoff valve to the toilet as well with a Dahl valve, They cost the same but are quick shut off and dont wear out. also you could reattach the pipe to the boards with New clips or staples.
