How or what do I charge for a roofing job?

Question:We are tearing off a shingle roof and redoing it,how much do companies charge,is it by sq.ft.?How much per square ft.?We are going to be lower of course!

Answers:
You need to figure materials, labor and profit percentage you want to be paid. You said "We" so i guess there will more than one person doing the work. Hopefully you are insured and bonded. If someone gets hurt, it could get real sticky. I would not hire anyone to do work for me that didn't have Workmans Comp. The bills can come back on the homeowner if not.

You need to be licensed in most states which means you should already know how much to charge. You can get fined if your not, check with your local building department. The terminology you used in your question tells me you've never done this before, there is a reason you need to be licensed.
Do you need to include disposal fees? What type of shingle, type of roof , how many different slopes on the house,? is there any damaged areas under the shingles that need repairing. Are you licensed? Insured? Bonded? Probably not! So why should you charge anywhere near what a roofing company with professional people charges? Make sure you have all your safety gear on in case an inspector comes by.not just hard hats, but fall restraints. Don`t worry they average $300-500 per person. Don`t forget to put that in the price per sq ft. Can`t wait to get more roofers out there.
If you need to ask this, I question your ability to do the job.
Usually by square ft and then percentages are added for labor etc. But as for doing it yourself, here is a recent personal experience. My 1600 sq ft home needed to be completley stripped and re-shingled. I got an estimate from a pro and it was $4500 and that did not include disposal of the 3 and 4 layers of existing shingles. I decided to do it all myself since I had a small amount of experience from doing it with my father as a teen. Anyway, it cost me $80/week for a dumpster and $1500 for all the materials. All in all it was hard work but easier than I thought now that I look back on it. At least I know tat the quality of the work was to my satisfaction.
Good luck. If you were in Waco,Tx I would give you a hand!!
