Swamp cooler?

Question:Got two questions, I live in a desset climate . We mount out swamp coolers on the roofs of our houses here. At the hottest part of the day the cooler logically doesnt work as well .Could we place a peice of plywood over the cooler to shade the metal frame and the cooling pads from the sun ? It would have to be strapped down of course. And how many windows should i have open at a time? i live in a large 5 bd home with a full basement..Thanks

Answers:
no windows open, you got the rest right.

the plywood wouldn't do any good. the water will keep the metal and pads cool.
you might want to make sure water-lines are all clear.
i would open 1 window in the room being cooled that is farthest from cooler.
you also may want to check pads to make sure they aren't crusty
good luck
