How can I prevent evaoporation of water in my pool?

Question:I have an inground, round pool and we have not had rain in 3 weeks, and my water level is dropping rapidly. What can I do to prevent evaporation? I do have a solar cover, however I do not use it as the temperature of the pool is already warm. i don't want to be swimming in bath water. I have heard of disks that open up and you can lay on top of the water, but those also have a "solar" effect. Any suggestions? And where can I buy it?

Answers:
If you are losing water rapidly then you most likely have a leak. Pools can lose a lot of water through evaporation as it's based on the surface area of the pool. There is only one mechanical means that will help it and that's to put a cover on it (not a solar cover but a regular winter type cover or debris cover).

Don't try any of the silly products on the market that stop evaporation. The liquid based evaporation preventatives are nothing more than oils that coat the surface of the pool and they will play havoc with your chlorine if left in for any length of time.

I know of no way to stop evaporation of an open pool exposed to the sun other than a cover; and you still have some evaporation. Its physics.
It's true, you must cover the pool to reduce the surface area of the water in contact with the air. Use covers that reflect sunlight if you want the water cooler.

You could also use a non-polar liquid with a density less than that of water to cover the pool. If this liquid has a favorable vapor pressure then evaporation of the water will subside. But I think you'll find that swimming in a pool whose water surface is coated in oil will be somewhat disconcerting.

Cheers!
All pool water evaporates, and you may need to top it up once in a while - but are you sure it's not leeking?
This is normal and nothing you can do to prevent evaporation.
Lakes, the ocean etc. all have evaporaton. A pool cover might help a little, but you will always have to add more water, that just the way it is.
