How do I clean my silver, without buying chemicals?
Question:My silverware, got discolored from something in the water, help me please!
Answers:
I know this sounds sounds crazy but bear with me. My grandmother taught me this.
Use plain fluoride toothpaste. Just smear a dab on and let it sit there momentarily then rub it with a wet cloth. Rinse in lukewarm running water. You can actually even use a toothbrush to clean detailed areas on the handles. The fluoride in the toothpaste will remove the mineral deposits (that's what's in the water that stains it) without damaging the silver.
I know it sounds crazy. I thought she was out to lunch too. But it really works quite well.
I got this tip...
silver: line a pan with aluminum foil and fill with water; add a teaspoon each of baking soda and salt. Bring to a boil and immerse silver. Polish with soft cloth.

And this tip...
Cleaning Silver
Methods of cleaning silver should be determined by the valued placed on it--monetary or sentimental--and the design of the pattern. Silver with deeply "carved" patterns that are enhanced by an oxide or French gray finish should be hand polished with a high quality silver cream or polish.
Hand rubbing develops patina on silver which adds to its beauty.
Ornamental silver pieces that have been lacquered may be washed in lukewarm water; hotwater could remove the lacquer.
