Do i have to clean my fireplace or chimney if it hasn't been used in 2 years?

Question:I didn't realized my fireplace even worked!

Answers:
Oh, yes, please do. The soot that accumulates in there can ignite and cause a fire in the chimney that could burn down your home. And inspect for cracks, etc. that could mean fire hazard.

An unused chimney is the preferred habitat for raccoons, squirrels, chipmunks etc. I would suggest having the flue inspected to see if a cleaning is required. If not then you're good to go. To prevent animal infestation you can install a chimney cap/screen at the top to block entrance.
If you don't know how much it was used before sitting for 2 years then you need to give it a good looking over. If it has a lot of creosote stuck on interior walls of the chimney you need to clean it.

Also look for critters that have built nests.
Your house may not be as old, but German law requires chimneys to be inspected and cleaned twice a year by a professional chimney sweep. They don't have chimney fires in Germany. Spend a penny and get it looked at.
