Which color wires for rewiring 3-prong plug?
Question:I have an old appliance with a 3-prong plug. The wires are black, brown, and blue.
I bought a replacement plug, but the wiring diagram talks about black, white, and green.
I'm pretty sure black will still go to black (right?), but how do I match up the other colors?
Answers:
Assuming this is a 120 volt appliance, I would use a meter.
Attach one lead of the meter (in Ohms or continuity mode) to the metal body of the appliance, and then touch each wire to see which is ground. My guess is blue - but the meter must confirm.
Or you could follow the pattern of the old plug? Ground is the center round or upside down "U" prong. Black or Hot is the one on the right as you face the wall receptacle with the ground hole down. White or Neutral is the wider prong on the left of the wall receptacle.
Get a cheap continuity checker and check which prong goes to what color and attach new wire the same way.
Just find out which one is Ground in old plug. I,am prey sure
it's blue then connected to the green wire in new plug . Other
two color are OK if change place but make sure old ground to the green.
