I just bought a house that had an existing pool. How do I clean it, fill it, and get it ready for use?

Question:First time pool owner here, if you couldn't tell! We siphoned the rain water off the cover and pulled that off the pool. We skimmed out some of the leaves that were in the pool, but there is a lot of sand and debris on the bottom yet. What steps should I take to get it ready for use?

Answers:
First off did they leave anything that goes with the pool such as the vacuum? Does the pump still work, Your going to need to shock it. If i was you make a list of all the items you have and go to a pool store and let them know what you got and they could tell you more about what your going to need

brush it down, vacume it, at least twice, two to three days apart and add shock. then, take a water sample to your local pool supplier and they will analize it for chemical balance (may be a slight charge for this and should be done several days after adding shock).
hire a pool guy, you will save money and time and aggervation. this coming for a guy who builds pools.
