It depends on the type faucet you have. There are so many different styles, you need to give us a description of yours. Good luck!
Obviously, you can try pulling up on the lever that engages the shower from the lower faucet. There is a little gasket seal that stops the water from the lower faucet sending all the water to shower head. If this gasket is worn or cracked it may not be seating properly thus allowing water to come out in both places. Depending on the age of the faucet you might need to replace the whole faucet. Usually instructions are included with your new faucet and it's not that difficult to do-it-yourself.
You will need to turn off your water supply valve at your meter first though.
You need a new tub spigot. But first you have to remove the old one. It could be screwed on or just held on with a small screw. If you know the make you can try and look up the manufacturer and see how it is put together. You can pick up a new one at Lowes or H/D.
have to remove the valve from the valve body with a special tool and replace the rubber seal or o-ring
It sounds like you are talking about the tub spout.
Some makes leak a little anyway.
But if yours leaks enough to affect the shower, then it's best to replace it. They are about 10 bucks.
No real quality one anymore. They usually last around 10 years.
Unscrew it with a pair of channel lock pliers. Seldom do I have to use a pipe wrench.
In thirty five years of plumbing, I remember only two twisting and breaking in the wall, and it took more work to get it going again.
So it's a chance you might break something, but slightly.
But if you feel uncomfortable doing it, get a plumber.
If I could do it for you, it would be about $65. That's all.
