Windows let in light, what is the lawful requirement. and how do i get it checked out.?

Question:i have had a lift put in my house, some of the lift is always infront of the window, blocking much of the light that would normally come in. I need to find out if this is lawful and if it's not what i can have done about it.

Answers:
i'm not sure about the exact measurements but i know it has to big enough for a fireman with breathing gear to get in and out.

Its a matter of local building code. The best source of info is your code enforcement officed.
Windows are not a requirement on most homes. So I doubt you are breaking any laws (unless possibly the window is the only other way out of the room, which may violate fire codes). The best place to ask would be your county's building inspector and since he should have inspected the lift installment anyway you should be OK.
