I have question for a bad apartment leak?
Question:this has been going on since yeasterday morning. i thought it was maybe the air conditioner that was leaking. so i went into the bathroom and the water coming from the ceiling is yellow. i thought my husband didnt flush the toilet, so im getting all mad at him and he's telling me he didnt, so i go in there and flush the toilet. he leaves for the night and its just me and my baby. so i go back in the bathroom 30 min later i see the same thing, the water is yellow.. could this be pee or something else? plz tell me what you think? the apartment above me has the same floor plan as i do, so the toilet is in the same location.. the water/pee is leaking into the toilet.. i called the emergency line, and its 6 am right now and the apts office doesnt open until 830A, so i have something bad i need to desperately tell them...please tell me what you think... no dumb answers plz!
Answers:
ac condensation leak,not pee
most likely bathroom upstairs like you suspect
First thing you need to do is protect yourself from having to pay for damages to your apt. or belongings. Take pictures of the leak and any damage and keep a dated log of what you are finding.
I'm not sure where the leak is as your explanation is confusing. You said it's coming from the ceiling? Is the ceiling leaking or the drain pipe going through the ceiling? I'm not sure I'm understanding you.
In any case call the apartment supervisor, land lord or maintenance man for your building. Have them look at and fix the problem. Being it's an apartment there is not much you can personally do to fix it...get someone in who can.
Is your A/C unit located in the ceiling above that bathroom? If so, it could possibly be that the condensation drip pan is leaking. This can occur if the normal drain valve gets clogged up.
If your unit is above that bathroom, there should be a panel that will drop down to get acess to the unit using a couple half turn fasteners. I had this problem in my apartment and simply undid one of the fasteners (luckily located right above the bathtub) to allow the built up water to drain out of that one side, instead of all over the floor.
Now, I suppose that it could possibly be a leak from upstairs as well. See if you can determine at what point the water is leaking. Is it all the time constant, as though a water line is leaking? Is it when your upstairs neighbor flushes? If it seems to increase right after the A/C shuts off, I would have to say it's the drip pan thing mentioned above, otherwise it could be a leak else where.
The yellow coloring could be from rust, from running through insulation or along boards or any multitude of things, it is most likely not pee... but don't drink it just in case... : ) J.K.
For now, unless you feel like taking a chance of being covered in water by lowering down the A/C panel yourself (if there is one); I recommend putting down buckets and/or towels to prevent damage from water. Then just sit it out until the maintenance guy can come in.
good luck!
3m Sticky tape if this dont nothing will
