Why does my bathroom smell like sewage?

Question:My bathroom will randomly smell like sewage. There is no discolored water coming out of anywhere, I turn on the water and smell it and it doesn't smell, the smell doesn't come after using the water, such as taking a shower, running the washing machine, or flushing the toiliet, and nothing seems clogged. Yet the smell can be overpowering at times. What could this be and what can I do?

Answers:
You may need have your lines snaked. Call your local Roto-Rooter man, or have a qualified plumber snake your pipes.

Maybe there is a back-up in the pipes. Call the plumber.

The pipe that lets that foul air out of the building may be clogged. This is a pipe that will lead either out a wall or out the roof. It is generally vented out the roof. It is possible something (bird, bat) is lodged in there.
check for cracks in or between bathroom tile because if water comes through it make a bad smell and soaks the floor underneath
most likely the sub-floor is rotten underneath the regular floor, probably the bathroom floor needs to be replaced.
There is no way for me to be sure, but I would bet that your seal on the bottom of your toilet is leaking. It can leak sewer gas without leaking water, in fact they usally do. Go to the home center and buy a deep, thick, beeswax seal. Disconnect the water supply from the tank, flush the toilet until it runs dry. Remove the nuts from the floor flange on either side of the bottom ot the toilet and lift it straight up. Turn it over, water will come out, and remove the old seal and put the new one on the bottom of the toilet and lower straight down onto the bolds, put on the nuts, and reconnect the water. Should, but not definitely, solve your problem.
Run some hot water down the tub and follow it by a 1/2 cup of vinegar or bleach! That will take away the smell. Do it once a month and you won't have that smelly problem again!
If it doesn't smell after you use the shower, then it is a "P" trap going dry. The trap allows water to stand in the pipe and block out odor. It could also be a clogged vent pipe, or the wax ring around the toilet. I'm going with the trap though.
