How would you thin latex/acrylic wall paint if it gotten thick during storage. water? true, false or other?
Question:I have left over paint from my den that I painted 5 years ago and I am having to patch a hole. The left over paint seems thick. Do I thin this with water? After painting the patch... I would like to thin the paint down to where I would have enough to do almost the whole wall a thin coat... sort of feathering out and away from the patched area... so the new patch won't be so obvious. I have to recommend this paint... I just washed down the whole room and it looks as if i just painted it. I am now waiting for my patch to dry so I can sand smooth...

if it is good paint, like sherwin williams, you can add a little distilled water and it wont change the color . make sure to mix it well. if you thin the paint and have enough to one coat the wall it wont matter if there is a small color change.
In 5 years the paint on your wall has faded. Depending on how much the touch up may be very noticeable, and feathering it out may be even worse.
I do not recommend thinning with anything. I would go buy a new quart or gallon of paint to match the color on the wall as it is currently, after fading. Or you can do an accent wall of a deeper or lighter shade.
Good luck!
hi
you could used some water a little at a time
but remember more water might change the shade of the paint
might be better off to get a pint for about $5.00
Yes, water would be used to thin latex paint. But the amount of thinning you are talking about might cause the color to change, along with the surface appearance (gloss). I would recommend you go ahead and shell out the $25 or so bucks to get a fresh can of paint. You'll be better off doing it right the first time then to try to save a dime and have to do it twice.
