How to repair a hole in upholstered furniture?
Question:I have a small (less than the size of a dime) hole in the fabric of my couch. What is the best way to go about patching the hole up? Is this something best left to a professional?
Answers:
If it is an expenmsive one, yup. If not, screw it up yourself.
Turn the couch over and on the bottom where the fabric is staple/nailed to the wood, there will be pieces of the same material here that you can cut out and use for your patch. Keep in mind `tho, this piece will be "New" so, you may have to bleach it a tad to better match your cushion.
Cut as big a piece as you can ((for more than one attempt) and Also so you can match any pattern the fabric may have).
Trim any strings or "fuzzies" around the hole and cut a piece to EXACTLY match the hole.
Take a piece a little larger than the hole (pattern does`nt matter here), turn upside down and stick it in the hole such that, as much of the backing covers the hole as possible from underneath.
Take a cue tip and dip it into Latex adhesive and dab into the hole onto the backing of the upside down piece.
Don`t put a LOT in there. Just put enough for it to soak in a little and then a bit more `til well covered.
IMPORTANT! Be careful Not to get any on the nap on top around the hole!
Also dab some on the edges of the hole while you`re at it. A small flat screwdriver will aid in lifting the edges of the hole. Being careful not to get any on the nap.
While this drys, coat the underside of the piece you cut to Exactly fit much the same way the bottom of your hole is covered.
Especially around the edges.
AGAIN, be careful not to get any on the nap on top of your patch. If you do, cut another piece. You have plenty, yes? (:>
Then set this aside glue side up (:> until All surfaces are tacky and none sticks to your finger when touched.
Place patch carefully in the hole and press down Firmly.
What hole?
Best to whip a couple stitches around the edges for best results. Just don`t pull too tight or it will pucker. We use a curved surgical needle starting the knot under the patch (unseen) but a straight one will do.
The reason I stress not getting any on the nap is, the only way you can get it off is to cut it off!
Also, it makes an otherwise Perfect patch look like the devil did it!
Good luck with it!

P.S. We use this trick on cigarette or fireplace coal burns in carpet.
