How can I help disguise the scratches on my gloss worktop?

It depends on what the top is made of. Is it granite?
Go to an Auto parts store and get a Maguires product called fill and glaze or similar with a carnuba wax. It is not permanent but inexpensive and easy to apply. We have used it for years and works very well. Good Luck
From my experience, use a sand paper of ZERO grade very carefully and apply french polish.
