How to fix 2x2 foot hole in popcorn ceiling?
Question:I have to patch a hole in a popcorn ceiling. How do I do this? I've got a half sheet of drywall and I'm going to make the hole an even 2x2, then cut my 2x2 piece of drywall so it fits in there.
my questions is:
1. do I have to attach the replacement piece of drywall to the wood?
2. do I have to tape the seams?
3. how do i apply the popcorn without having to rent the equipment? is it possible to apply a little by hand?
Answers:
The new drywall will have to be screwed into wood on all 4 sides. If your hole does not match up with your current studs, you should use 2x4s to build a square frame to fasten your new drywall to. The 2x4s will fit in such a way so that the drywall surrounding the hole gets screwed into the wood. You then screw the new drywall to the new 2x4 frame.
Once your drywall is securely fastened with drywall screws, you will have to tape the seam and smooth the drywall compound by putting on a number of coats and sanding in between. You might have to use a putty knife or scraper to remove the popcorn texture so that you can overlap the seam.
When you are all done doing the patch, you can apply some texture using an additive to your paint or primer. They also make economical products to add texture. you will want to make it match as closely as possible. You might then consider painting the whole ceiling with a long nap roller.
Cut the hole such that you cut only half the width of the joist on each end. Use a utility knife. Put more screws on the part that is left. Scrape off about 4" of popcorn around the hole. Screw in the new piece 8" on center on both ends. Tape all around with paper tape set in normal joint compound. Let dry a day, sand if any high spots and add second layer of mud. Sand if need be and put on smooth third coat. Sand the next day. Get a pro in to spray to popcorn for you, it's too hard to get right the first time you try.
Is it a 2 in. hole or a 2 ft. hole. A 2 in. hole you can do by hand but you would probably need someone who has a sprayer to do a 2 ft. hole. Call someone who does this locally and ask if you can purchase enough spray to patch it, or talk to your local hardware guy. Sometimes they have bags that have been damaged and will sell cheap. He also can give instructions on how to repair it. Hope this will help. OOPS! Need to put my reading glasses on!!
Question 1 - Yes
Question 2 - Yes
Question 3 - If you are worried about a match that you won't be able to see after your done, then you'll need to scrape off all the existing ceiling texture and either reapply yourself of have a painting contractor do it for you. Otherwise you can try to use some of the kits sold by Home Depot.
