Which way should my ceiling fans be turning to keep my house cool with the air conditioner on?
Question:
Answers:
Mine are going clock wise
blowing up to the ceiling
clockwise.
around in circles
For the umpteenth time, DOWN.
Draw the air up in winter.
In the summer blowing up and vs versa in the winter.
Clockwise, the direction that they actually blow air down keeps a room cool. The direction that they blow air up moves hot air from the top of the room down to the bottom of the room. Also box fans over the AC vents helps to keep a place up to something like 4 degrees cooler than the temperature is set at.
All you have to remember is that heat rises. If it is summertime, you want to adjust it so it sucks the air upwards to pull the hot air so it will circulate in with the cold air. If it is winter, you need to push the hot air down so it will help you stay warmer.
your fans should be blowing up to push the heat towards the cieling rather than down towards you.
it should be going counter clock wise to pull the cold air that settles on the floor, and clock wise in the winter to push the warm air by the ceiling down
u want the air to blow down on u ...this will lower the ar temp on ur skin....
lic. gen. contractor
clockwise in the summer and counter clockwise in the winter
It should be drawing up the cool air from the floor to help distribute it evenly
In the summer, you want the air blowing down. This creates a wind chill as well as circulates the air.
In the winter, you want it pulling air up. It is JUST to circulate the air - but with no wind chill effect. Probably best on the lowest speed - unless you have vaulted ceilings.
It is incorrect to think the fan needs to "pull" the cold air up from the floor. If a fan is running in the room, all the air will be about the same temp. because it is all being "mixed" together.
What direction you blow the air (up or down) all depends on whether you want wind chill effect or not. Some people don't like the air blowing on them while they sleep, so they have the air going "up" in their bedrooms even in the summer. It won't be as cool in there (lack of wind chill) but the air will circulate.
