Can I add a 230 volt line to breaker box?
Question:Okay, I know how to install the line, I just need to know if my breaker box can handle the addition, how do I tell? Not a lot of info on breaker box. There are open slots for additional lines however.
Answers:
If you live in the US, yes if you have two single breaker slots side by side.
1- Down one side there will be single numbered slots.
(1-3-5-7-9 etc)
2- Down the opposite side (2-4-6-8 etc)
3- If you check you will find that #1 and #2 are on the same 120 Volt line.
4- For 240v you would need #1 and #3 ( a double breaker of the proper current rating (20 Amp, 30 Amp etc)
5- You can't get it wrong except if you get a piggy back (one behind the other in the same line) [uses one slot and feeds 2 circuits with the same 120V source].
Tell the home center employee what you want and he'll show you.
6- One more thing, be sure to get the brand name of your Load Center (ie: Square "D", GE, Federal Pacific etc.). They are not interchangeable.
Good Luck ! ! !
Get a electrician to do it if you can't answer this question yourself if there is room for a 220 line and a space in the box big enuff for a 220 breaker you can.
You best leave this job to a pro. Electricity [especialy 230v lines] let you make only one mistake, and that one will usually be fatal].
Only a licensed electrician should be doing the hook-up, and technically it should be inspected by the local building inspection department to insure it all meets code.
Hi Yes if there is space enough and you have enough amperage you can. Check your main shut off breaker to see what amperage you have. If its 100 amps idunno 150 maybe and 200 probably. Do you have electric hot wtr htr/Central air/Oven etc. See where im going? Good luck
where u are @ .. ! any way if u r in us, u need to replace the box to take the load= line ..so u need to go to laws or home depot to buy they. & c rep will tell u more info as well they are so good about it. I m Electrical eng but i m nt sure if u are saying the right thing thought. So dont take my answer, coz that 230 V could kill u if u miss use it!! watch out man!
Your breaker box with have the 230 volt or not. Are you looking to add a 230 line for like a stove or dryer?
The supply line that comes to the building is or isn't 230 volts.
Wires are in a cable most times now, but if you take the cover off you breaker box you can check the wires coming in.
If there are 3 wires coming in you have 230. To check just use a tester & touch both bars with it. (1 probe on each bar)
If so you can add breakers to the open slots or tap off & add another breaker box.
if there is a spot to put it then yes but at the same time with the extra load you might trip the main breaker find out the amp service to your house.
