Baseboards and old hardwood floors?
Question:whats the best way/product to fill in the gaps between where the bottom of the wall baseboard meets the wood floors (the floors are old and a bit wavy, thus there are some gaps created and I have a funny feeling bugs can get in from underneath)
Answers:
i would just use some quarter-round wood trim easy to install and it wont cost much.
I also have hard wood floors, I noticed the prior own filed the cable holes with a wood colored putty.
You could use quarter-round or Base-shoe type mouldings to hide the gap... be sure to glue all mitred joints.
Real wood expands and contracts some with humitity and temperature, so you won't get an air (or insect) tight seal. Plus, the old boards probably flex a tiny bit when you walk across them.
Go with the quarter-round and nail to EITHER the floor OR the baseboard. If you try to nail it to both, those old boards will pull against the nails, and you'll split the quarter-round -- making it look worse than when you started!
The two surfaces (floor and wall/baseboard) should be allowed to 'float' a teeny bit as they expand and contract.
I'd install a new quarter round and apply a bead of sealent on the interior edge to seal any gaps between the quarter round and the floor.
