Why does my doorbell only work when my light switch is turned on?
Question:I had someone finish my basement and when they were done, I found out that my doorbell only works when I have one of the light switches on down there. I don't think that the person touched the transformer at all. Is there somewhere else where the wiring may have gotten crossed?
Answers:
Sounds like your bell transformer is hooked into that light circuit. ~
Nope, somehow he wired the transformer to the light switch.
He screwed it up... get his *** back over to fix it. FOR FREE!
Otherwise, you probably will need to run a new wire over to the transformer from a constant source of power.
Yup, he touched the wiring. He wired the transformer to the switch leg in a light circuit instead of the feed leg. If you understand electricity, you can change it, but I would call your electrician back and make him correct it. It is a simple 5 minute job.
it sounds like they have tried to run the power for it through the light switch but they have done it wrong so you need to get an electrcian to look at it and probebly put a wire from the consumer unit( main fuse box) to the doorbell so it works properly
Because the wire for the doorbell is attached to the wrong side of the light switch.
find the switch that the door bell works with. take off the cover and see how many wires are coming from the top of the switch. if it's only one take that wire and hook it to the bottom with the other wire . it should work all the time. does that switch work anything else.if it does then you will have to find which wire is the door bell and do the same thing.
Don't fix it yourself you paid to have it done so have them come back and do the job right.
