I'm not a plumber, but I've had this problem too.
Our toilet tank was this type: http://www.friendlyplumber.com/images/am...
The problem was, though everything was new, the flapper wasn't completely covering the opening. Open your tank and press down on the rubber flapper to see if the toilet stops running. If it does, this may be your problem.
You'll have to fiddle around with flappers (it took us 2 different tries) and the length of the chain to get it to work properly.
the filler may be loose
Check the flapper valve and the handle to make sure the handle "catches" with the flapper valve closed. You may need to jiggle the handle a bit to engage it
get it professionally done
I was having the same commode problems too & the commode isn't even a year old. All of a sudden, the toilet would keep running after it was flushed. I had to take the top off & lift up on the arm that the black bulb is attached to & it would stop running. One day, I was determined to fix the problem once & for all. I reached into the toilet tank & on the far left side was a white pedestal that the arm & black rubber ball are attched to. There was a small red button on top of the pedestal & I twisted it a couple times & when I flushed the toilet, it didn't keep running. The problem is the the arm that the black ball is attached to. Experiment a little & maybe you can fix your commode too. I'm no plumber, but the problem bugged me & my Finnish determination got the best of me & that's a good thing.
Only 2 possibilities. Flapper vavle not seated properly after flush (sometimes get wavy over time or caught on chain) Or two.Float restricted from extending to maximumpeak. Leave tank lid off and observe. First lift float too full extent and press flapper valve down. One of the two good luck
It is a very easy repair and has to be done every once in awhile to stop the toilet running. You don't even need to empty the tank.
Take the float by hand and raise it until the toilet stops running.
You'll see that the lever from the float to the valve is attached to the valve by a screw assembly. With a screw driver and a pair of pliers loosen the assembly, you don't have to take it off, LOWER the arm's angle so when the float rises it puts more force on the shut off valve. Then tighten the assembly again.
Some newer toilets have a plastic assembly so you can do the repair by hand. The toilet downstairs has the new assembly and I just loosen the fly bolt with my fingers, it has extra large surface so you can easily turn it with my fingers. Lower the lever so the float will put more pressure on the shut off valve and retighten the flybolt. Remember - lefty loosey, righty tighty.
If the float is on a perpindicular rod and there is no lever. Again loosen the float, push it down or up until the toilet stops running and retighten the float so it remains at that level.
If it's the flap valve, turn the water off at the emerency valve. Flush the toilet. Hold up the flap and clean it off, it's usually has some debris or dirt has built up so until it won't sit perfectly on the drain and give it a perfect seal.
Also check the chain assembley and see if it has a slight kink in it. If it does, toilet manufacturers have made it very easy to fix. Raise the flap, unhook it, unkink the chain and rehook it. This one is the easiest fix of all.
That usually does it.
The one exception is that if it is the flap sometimes you have to replace it because rubber becomes more brittle with age. With a five year old toilet I doubt it would need a new flap and a simple cleaning will take care of the problem.
Poppyman's suggestion is really good -- it will tell you whether or not the problem is with the flap valve and save you a lot of time.
Try this simple test! Drop a few drops of food coloring into the tank, and let it sit. Don't flush the toilet. If the food coloring appears in the bowl, the flapper is not seating correctly, and even though it is new, it might be warped, letting water get by. Good luck!
the fill valve or the drain at the tank is leaking need more info.
