Is our Fridge freezer dead?
Question:It's a frost free Brant which is about 2 1/2yrs old (and just out of warranty). The fridge is fine but the freezer has frosted up and although its still colder than the fridge it's not freezing any more. We tried defrosting it but that only seemed to help for a day or so. I have heard that it could be a circuit board thats gone which is very expensive and that we'd be better off with a new machine. Is ths right?
Answers:
No..
The reason it frosts up is probably because the door seal is leaking.
Check that the seal is OK and that the door is closing properly,.
Defrost again and see how you go.
agree with andy t, this happened to my parents who were told they needed a new one but they changed the seal and was working fine after this,
Yes ,It sounds a bit dodgy to me. I've had two experiences of a similar nature with 2 fridge freezers. In both instances like you, fridge was working, but freezer part was not reaching temp,
which should be between - 18 degs to -30 degs, & frosting
up quickly.
In my opinion, its better to have a separate
freezer, & separate refrigerator, if you have the space.
Consider chest freezers better than upright, I had one for
20 years & it was still going strong when I ditched it.
It seems two half years, in my experience is about the
life of fridge-freezers regardless of make.
Good luck
Most generally a frost free freezer that freezes up has a defective defrost part or a plugged drain. In order to be "frost free" your frig goes through a defrost cycle ever 6 or 8 hours. If the freezer drain line isn't plugged then 1 of these parts has failed. Defrost timer, defrost termination switch defrost heater. None of these parts are super expensive. Make sure the door seal is in fair condition and the freezer fan motor is running but it sounds like a defrost part to me. HARV TECH. 35 yrs.
This may be thought as a silly solution, but hey...
Try leaning the unit backwards a little, helps the door to close properly.

it could be your defrost thermostat,or your defrost heater,if one of them is bad or stuck it will not allow freezer to get cold.
