How do I repair a small hole in my shingled roof?

Question:I went on the roof to do a routine inspection, and found that there was a small hole (about 3/4 inch to an inch) going through 2 (overlapped) shingles, and I believe it went through the roof. I'm not sure of the best way to attack this. Is there some repair kit at the home depot or something that I can pick up? Thank you.

Answers:
Installing a new shingle or two is very easy. Your local hardware store caries may colors. It won't cost you much to do it right and very little time.
Its very odd to have a hole that size for no reason. Was there a satelite dish there?
Don't fall off the roof.

replace the shingle
If there is no leak problem right now I would just take a piece of shingle an insert it up under the shingle with the hole in it. Some good quailty silicone caulk will hold it in place. This isn't the perfect fix but it is quick and will keep the water out.
Remove shingles and cut tar paper to visually inspect if hole penetrated roof sheeting. If the hole is less than an inch I would caulk the hole. More than an inch I'd nail on a flat metal sheeting patch.
Install new tar paper ,tucking a sheet under existing tar paper and another over existing tar paper with as much overlap as you can get.
Replace shingles.
For a temporary fix they sell special roofing caulk.
