having cut down quite a few large trees over the years the best advice I can give you is to get someone in to do the job for you
I say this because you won't be aware of the amount of branches and the main trunk of the tree you will have to move once the tree has been cut down let alone possible damage to your property and worse still to a neighbours property
a tree surgeon will have the correct equipment to deal with this where as you will have to transport it all away either in skips or hire a wagon which will incur quite a lot of cost, they will have the chain saws, the mulch machine and all the other safety equipment required, the ropes, ladders and most of all Insurance

If the tree is large enough to cause damage to people or property and you are not experienced in this sort of work it would be safer to leave it to the professionals , I expect your local council could advise you about local company's who can do the job.
If in doubt as to the safest way, call a tree service. Yes, it will cost you, but better that than make a mistake that could possibly cost you your life if you are unsure as to what to safely do.
Get a lumberjack! It's really not worth the hassle trying to do it yourself!!
If you are in the UK, it would be a good idea to check with the local Council before you touch the tree - it may have a preservation order on it. If you take one of those down, it will cost you megabucks in fines.
A tree surgeon would then be your best bet - if you insist on doing it yourself, start at the top if you live in a densely populated area - a tree can fall anywhere if you aren't experienced.

i know it costs but think carefully about the potential cost if you try yourself and it goes wrong!
i have quite a few friends who are tree surgeons and they have training, experience, chain saws (&certificate to use one), ropes and safety equipment...and insurance!!
it does depend what species and size.. we took some 30ft ash down with a bowsaw BUT ash grow fast so are pretty spindly and thin without much spread and we did it before the leave came out...the weight of the tree was easily held/directed by one person to control the fall...and we still nearly sent one into the neighbours garden!
if thinking of doing it yourself you need to consider
the likelyhood of getting through the trunk with a bowsaw or ax
how close it is to other trees, house, outbuildings, walls etc
what direction you want it to fall in
maybe needing ropes to help control the fall
does it need branches taking off first, then you need climbing equipment and ropes for sure.

get an arborist(tree cutter)they will advise you what to do...(c4 would be funny )
If you have to ask then you need to get the pros.atleast with the big trees.

Trust me hire somebody. I just went through this this weekend. I thought it wouldn't be so bad. I had the tree tied off to another tree. I had a winch hooked up to it and made my cuts. Botttomline I spent the whole weekend trying to get the tree off of my roof, patched up the hole in the side of my house and worked on the roof. Now I'm waiting for the insurance company to come take a look.
It might cost you to have it done, but it will be a lot cheaper in the long run. Also you don't have to deal with the tree when it is down. Got a plan for all the limbs, logs, etc? I spent all night burning them just to get rid of everything. Didn't have much else to do since my antennas got ripped down in the mishap.
If you have to ask that here, hire someone else to do it and make sure they have insurance.
