Dark Dirty Crusty Film Over Wood Laminates.. How Do I remove it?

Question:I just purchased a home that has wood floor laminates in the living room. Most of the floor seems ok but there is a large section with a dark almost crusty film over it. I'm not sure what it is. If I scrub it with a metal brush it seems to come off but I'm afraid of scratching the floor. Is there anything that I can put on the floor that will be strong enough to remove this layer of crust without damaging the floor? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answers:
Soak a towel in hot water and vinegar. Wring out the excess mixture and lay the towel over the spot. Continue doing this until the grime is softened to where it will wipe up easily. Clean the entire floor with a solution of vinegar and water in a spray bottle, doing only small areas at a time. Dry with a towel, then move on to the next area.

Most likely was from a ruined rug. Don't soak the floor, it will damage the flooring...and don't use a wire brush either.

Follow gracies suggestion of softening the crud until it can be easily cleaned. You could try a plastic scraper (just like a paint scraper, but made to not damage surfaces).

Good Luck.
