Above ground pool question?
Question:My mother gave me her above ground pool and my husband is currently trying to level the ground in our back yard to put it up. My question is does he need to put sand down before putting the pool up? I've read that sand helps even the ground out and helps to keep the liner from tearing. I also read that you can even add a cushion type thing on top of the sand for extra protection of the liner. My main question is though is the sand essential to putting up this pool?
Answers:
Yes, you do need sand. I have an above ground Intex 18 x 48 pool. Put sand under it which for my size required about 8 tons of sand. I also to maintain the sand to one area, built a square box out of yard timbers in which is done first. Then put in the sand which runs about $5-10 dollars per ton in my area. (Missouri). To level the sand a shop broom works great. When close to flat turn the broom over and use it as a finish tool to lightly drag across the top. I then laid a couple of big blue tarps over the area where the pool will sit. Just in case a rock or something worked its way up. We then set up the pool and now I can't keep the kids out of it. OH VERY IMPORTANT!! Get a storage tub like the ones you store stuff away in and fill it with a little bit of water and place it by the ladder and use it to rinse your feet in before entering. This keeps sand and grass clippings and others of the sort out of the pool. Have fun.!!
it is worth the extra effort.
Absolutely, the base under the liner should be either a base made for the pool, or sand.
Below is a link you will find informative about pool installations.
Yes, sand is usually put under pools. Not only to level it out, but it can help it from tearing. My pool has not only sand, but insolation underneath (I think that's the extra cushion type thing you're talking about). I've rarely heard of a pool without sand or some type of cushioning underneath, so I would put it on. Though the insolation is not mandatory.
! Very important! We have an aboveground pool, the sand cushions the liner, which is really expensive, and helps keep it safe.
Go with the sand!
