I'm installing ceiling fan. Ceiling has a ground and two white. Which white one is actually black?
Question:I need help because the ceiling has a two wire with ground cables. The green is the ground, but unfortunately I can't remember which of the two white cables is actually the black hot wire. Can someone help?
Answers:
One sure way to find out which of the "white" wires is actually the "hot" wire is to leave it disconnected from the fan and turn on the wallswitch. Then take a little voltage tester and see which one has power on it. There is a reason that the manufacturer sends instructions with the appliance.Even though it is a single phase ,110 volt motor in the fan(I am assuming) for safetys sake you should always hook your house neutral and house hot to the correct terminals on the appliance. At the panel in your house the white should be hooked to the neutral buss and the other(brown?) should be hooked to the circuit breaker.
It doesnt matter, all you have to do is close the circuit
Yeah, it shouldn't matter. It's not like a DC circuit where the fan would run backwards if you got it wrong.
Hook up the ground to the fan chassis and then just connect the 2 'white' wires from the ceiling junction box to the 2 wires from the fan (probably black and white).
No instructions with the ceiling fan?
Does the fan have a light kit?
Is the box wired for a ceiling fan with light kit?
Is there no distinction between the white wires? (you just said two white) If they're both the same white and neither has a stripe, you can wire it with either wire to the ground or maybe both.
You know, I really can't help much without knowing exactly your box looks like.
The green is ground and it don't matter which white you
use for white or black with ac current
