1st time with AC any start up tips? It's an older model and we are not sure of any prep work?

Make sure your filter is clean and let her rip! Monitor the unit for serveral minutes to make sure the unit working ok. If you notice any problems within the first few minutes, turn it off and have it serviced.
just turn it on. if its hot give it overnight to really see if its working if its humid too then give it about 2 days to get the humidity under control Thats all a tech will do if you call one if it doesnt seem like its working call a tech out to check it oh yeah at least make sure the filters clean
Make sure it's angled back instead of into your room. They build up condensation and you don't want it leaking into your room. You may want to consider switching at some point to a newer model for better efficiency.
