What would you do if you stuck inside the elevator?
Question:The elevator has no air conditioning. Ventilation is bad and the temperature is 80F outside. It may take an hour for the evelator repairman to get it running again.
If there is an earthquake, you could be trapped inside for days.
Do you think you could survive? For how long?
If you were working in a building with an elevator like that (you cannot walk to other floor. All doors are locked with no reentry), what would you do?
Answers:
Depending on the age of the elevator there is a maintenance door at the top. Sometimes the maintenance door is disguised to look like a panel so you might have to do some pushing to find it. Due to the risk, do not exit through the maintenance door unless you do not think you will survive by waiting inside the elevator --- and never leave if you have voice communications with the outside. If you go out the maintenance door, only do so if you are certain the power will not be coming back on anytime soon. Do not climb downward in the shaft! Always climb upward, either using the cable or the shaft maintenance ladder if so equipped. At the first door you come to make sure you have access in case the elevator power should come back on, and then try to prise the door open. If it will not come open, yell though the door for help but remain clear of the elevator at all times in case the power is restored. Also, always watch your footing because falling down the shaft will either kill you or paralyze you. Most of all, remain calm.
