Water heater Pressure relief valve question. The valve is on top with the little silver lever right?
Question:Waters leaking out Is the relief valve destroyed and needs replacing or can i just turn the water temperature down and the valve be saved and re-light the pilot. Got the thermo couple replaced turned the water way up and overnight water began leaking putting out the pilot i have water and gas turned off now.

The water may have had too much pressure and the valve was doing it's job. Once things dry out, relight the pilot and turn the temp down to a reasonable level. See if you have the same problem. If you do, then you can go to a hardware store or a home improvment store and replace the relief valve yourself. good luck.
Your pop off should be piped down along the side of your tank too. If there is no inspection requiring it to be done then just do it to keep your tank lit. Be sure that you can keep an eye on it for awhile to make sure your problem is fixed. My experience with pop off valves though is once they start leaking they tend to keep dripping.
One other thing you can do before replacing it would be try flicking or letting the valve snap shut a few time using the chrome lever lifting it up and then just let it slam shut.
Good luck
Turn the water temp down to normal. Work the relief lever a couple times to see if it will reset. Wait a couple days. If it still leaks, replace it.
