Hot water tap in the bathroom: i?
Question:when i turn the tap on/off there is nothing coming out of it: any solutions, is it the washer or something more serious
Answers:
if you live in a hard water area hard water calcium desposits may have ruined the valve...sorry but need to replace
Or It could be the packing gland.
To get to this you will need to remove the top of the tap then the easy clean cover which will unscrew. You don't need to turn the water of to do this. when you have removed the easy clean cover, you are then left with a spindle sticking up. On the top there is a small nut, this is the packing gland. undo the nut and slide it up the spindle. Put top back on tap and turn a few times to loosen spindle.Get some p.t.f.e. tape and put a few turns around spindle then retighten nut back down into tap. do not overtighten or you will end up with the same problem.
If your tap is the modern type, then you will need to buy the insert from B&Q. You can buy replacement parts. But if you need to fit the latter then you will have to turn off the water to replace the faulty part.
Hope this helps, good luck!
Did you check the shut off valve to your bathroom?
The whole of the tap mechanism might have seized. Doubt if it's just a washer. Possibly means the tap(s) need replacing.
This is what you do to confirm that the tap has seized in the closed position. Isolate the water supply to the tap. undo the water supply pipe at the compression joint. reach up under the sink and undo the nut locking the tap to the sink and remove the tap. Turn the tap to the open position and blow through the base of the tap. If you find that you can't blow air through it, this will prove that the tap has seized. To free the tap you can spray into it from both ends with WD40 or equivalent. Allow a few minutes for it to start to work and then try turning the tap open and closed, keep working it for a good amount of time and then try blowing it through again. Continue to do this until you free the valve inside the tap. Alternatively go out and buy a couple of new taps and change them.
Modern taps are BS 5412 which are prone to this type of problem. The have been turned off too-hard, and the "o" ring has slipped. If you are not experienced with plumbing get a plumber. In the olden days they were easy to repair, and only had to have their nut tightened occasionally.
