OH MY MY... Please don't listen to some of these crazy people. If you are not a trained tech, do not work on an A/C unit. This is not like fixing a leaky faucet. Call a tech. Ask around find someone who is very reliable. The cost is expensive, but that is because "most" tech's are highly trained professionals. Let them do the work, and you will be "cool". I am a professional steamfitter and HVAC tech with 30 years union experience. I cant even diagnose this problem just by what you said. So I dont know where these people are getting the idea to tell you, It's frozen! Your stat is broke! WOW, were trying to help, not give out meaningless answers!!
It is low on "freeon" and has frozen up. Call for service, nothing else you can do.
Is the air getting through the grills or registers? if so, maybe the compressor is not working. Just because the outside fan is running is no indication the compressor itself is running.
Feel the small copper pipe inside running to the furnace coil, it should be warm, and the larger line should be cool to cold.
If no or very little air is getting through, then the inside coil might be frozen, which is an indication of low freon, or extremely dirty filter condition.
Sounds like your thermostat is broken, We had the same problems and called a repair guy thinking it was going to cost hundreds because there was some huge problem and it turned out to be the thermostat was old.less than 50.00 and that was labor as well. Would have been less than 20 had we changed it ourselves.
It probably has over froze. You need to turn it off and if you can use a blow dryer on the ac unit. You can tell if this is the problem by checking your filter and the ac unit. If it has ice on it then it has over frozen. Whip out the blow dryer and get crackin'. If you find nothing suspicious on the filter (no ice) then just trying turning off your ac for a day or two then restarting it. If it still doesnt change then it is time for the repair man. Goodluck : )
My AC was on all the time but not cooling. I went outside to look at it. Even though the fan in the house was on, the outside unit was not on. I found a little reset switch and pressed it and it turned back on and started cooling. if that doesn't work, call around to see if anyone does "FREE ESTIMATES". Get two or three before having work done to make sure that is in fact the problem.
Call a licensed contractor (i.e HVAC dealer) and have them check out the equipment. It will be the cheapest and most reliable method for determining the problem.
Listen to the guy above me hes right. Call a pro it can be so many things. There is no way we could fix this problem over the internet.
