Has anyone sloped the earth away from their foundation and cured a basement leak with it.?
Question:I have a contractor coming to dig down find the leak put in window wells and soak the tar out of me because the air conditioning has to be moved at a cost of $600 also. The whole job $3K. I heard sloping the earth away from the house was the first thing to try. Anyone done it with success and do you need plastic under the slope. Any information will help. boattop@rogers.com Richard

i dug down 4 feet , placed plastic sheet down sloping away from the house , covered it with clear gravel set patio stones on top and that worked for years and still working , hope this helps and it cost so little
Hmmm not sure but I think I would think about putting in a french drain. Ask your contractor about it. You dig a trench beside your foundation, lay down a bed of gravel then lay a corrugated slotted drain pipe then refill with gravel. That might help with you drainage peoblems. But make sure you ask your contracted about it before you do it. I am unsure if that will be the best for you just an idea.
when we first moved to a new house it flooded several tines a year,,,,we painted inside with loc seal and put a foot of dirt sloping away...didnt leak fo 15 yrs.
Yes, positive drainage is the 1st step to a waterproof basement. If you have water running toward your house you're only asking for trouble. Also, gutters with downspouts that extend beyond the base of the house will help shed water away from the house.
The type of foundation will play a big role in its performance: poured in place vs. block vs. precast panels...
First you have to determine the source of the leaking water. If it only comes in when it rains or some other temporary source it is one thing. If the water is coming in from the ground water table it is another. Most likely it is the first one and diverting the water away from your foundation will stop the leak. I could move quite a bit of dirt and divert the water for that kind of money.
