right where the water enters the dwelling
They should be installed as close to the offending appliance as possible. Quick opening valves, used on ice makers, washing machines, toilets, and any water device that uses a solenoid type shut off, to start and stop water will aggravate the water piping. Water hammer is in part, the absence of air in the piping system. Without a cushion of air trapped inside the system, the water that has been moving in a forward motion, is stopped suddenly, when the valve shuts off, and like waves in a lake, the water has to move in the opposite direction. The pipes, if not secured properly, will vibrate, or rattle when this reaction takes place. If there is an air chamber in the system, it can lose its charge of air over time, and simply turning off the water to the house, opening all faucets, until no more water flows, and turning the water back on, will recharge your air chamber. good luck!
