How to fix a window air conditioner?
Question:My air conditioner in my bedroom is fairly new (two or three years old). When it turns out it makes a sudden loud noise and it continues to run very loudly. It almost like a very very loud ‘whirring’ noise. When I turn on the fan only option on the unit it is quiet and runs normal. Does anyone have any idea as to what could be causing the problem?
Answers:
Sounds like a bad compressor. Call a repairman.
The bearings in your compressor are going bad. This is not and easy do-it-yourself kind of repair, since most of the modern units are sealed, and any attempt to repair them will only cause more damage.
Sadly, it will probably be cheaper to replace than repair. I would contact the manufacturer with your problem and see if they will stand behind their product. If it's only two or three years old they should. I may even still be under warrantee.
It does sound like a compressor issue, but it is possible that the noise is the result of vibration from the compressor. Try opening the filter door on the front and removing the filter. This should expose the tube and fins used to cool the air. Apply slight pressure to various parts of the tube and fin structure and see if the noise is reduced or stops. If so, you have a vibration issue. If not, a new A/C would probably cost the same as having someone look at it to find the problem.
Most are only warrantied for one year. Find the make, model and serial number on the tag inside the front panel, and call the manufacturer to see if it is under warranty.
Is the AC attempting to cool? If yes, try tucci's suggestion. If not, toss and replace. Will cost you more in labor to fix than buying a new one.
