Sears Garage Door Opener # 139.655000 will not stay open?

Question:Via help from my neighbor:
No power, switched to manual via pull cord. Found loose wire on transmitter & fixed. With door closed, pressed switch to activate. Door only lifted a foot. Chain came off sprockets...fixed. Door now opens all the way and when it reaches Operator Box, hits it and immediately reverses and completely closes. Is this an easy repair? What to do?

Answers:
your chain came off sprocket? Are you sure the sprocket is ok? You need to remove cover on operator and see if any black shavings on top of gear. If so you need to replace sprocket kit b4 you go further. those chains dont fall off for a reason. As far as hitting stop and reversing you have limits out of sequence. the easiest thing to do is remove chain again. Run operator untill it gets to full close position. On left side of operator you have two screws recessed in housing. the one closest to the door is usually close. Remove cover and hit button when little meat strip hits and motor stops you are in close limit. Attatch the door to trolley on chain and reattatch chai. That gets yourr limits close. You then use those two screws to fine tune in both directions. You might want to turn the up limit back a little to decrease travel before you go to far. You have to make sure you get limits in sequence bc if not you will fight it forever

Adjust your up stop, it is a screw on the side of the housing.
There are stops for totally open and totally closed. You need to adjust these stops. There could be another stop for safety. If the door comes down on a dog or human the door should automatically open. This is an excellent device if children are present.
You should have two travel limit setting pots on the back of the unit. One for close limit and one for open limit. Turn the open one to less distance (left) and see where it stops. If it continues to hit the stop and reverse keep backing it off until the door opens and stays at a position where the bottom edge of the door is a few inches from the top of the door opening. You will need to adjust the down pressure setting too so the door closes snug to the ground without reopening. Once you get it set to that point, place a 2X4 under where the door closes, and the door should hit this and re-open. Adjust the down pressure adjustment until it reverses when it hits the board, but stays down and snug to the ground when the board is not there.
