Can I change my bathtub fixtures without turning off the water?
Question:The valve for the hot water side is not working so I am going to take it off and replace it. Any tips or what NOT to do?
Answers:
Shut off the water, or you will have problems (like flooding your bathroom). The valve is what controls the flow of water, so if it is missing. ? If it is just the hot water valve, you can comfortable risk just turning of the water at the hot water heater. Some water will come out as the pipes clear out, so be prepared to catch it if necessary. Also, if you plan to sweat the pipes (solder the new valve in) you can't do it if the pipes are wet, so dry them good! If you do decide to change the cold water line at the same time, then turn off the water where it comes into the house (unless there is a shutoff in the basement, I have a slab, so gotta go to the curb).
Not unless you want to get wet.
When you take off the handle and cover plate there should be a hot and cold service valve- looks like a round stop with a slot for a large screw driver.
If you don't find one of those then you have to turn off the water to the house.
What not to do... Do not remove the fixture without turning off the water.
There should me a main water shut off for your whole house. It in one valve (cold, because it is prior to the hot water heater). Turn that off and drain the water in the line. This will turn off all the water to the house, so you may want to replace all the valves that are not working at once.
Sure. If you are really, really super fast.
Yes, but you're going to get soaked.
you should always shut off water valve when changing, a water fixture.
