What is the significance of stubby/conventional screwdriver length difference ? Just portability convenience?

Have to disagree with Mark Light.

The longer the shaft, the greater the torque. Try using a long shafted driver to do up a screw tight, then try with the stubby one, and see the difference. I dont see how the width of the handle can make a difference, except to give you better grip. Only use a stubby to get into tight places, otherwise use the longest shaft you can.

sometimes a long one wont fit where you need it to go!
torque.
if the shorter driver will reach, you get more torque with a shorter one. it has to do with how much pressure your wrist is able to apply, not what the shaft can handle.
Stubby's are made to get into area's when there is no room for a standard length.
different size screwdrivers fit different size screws.
Use the screw driver that feels best in your hand.

The bit should be as big as the screw head & the length should be long enough to get to the screw & so you can have a good grip on the screw driver.

If you are in a real tight space you may need shorter length.
torque depends on the diameter of the handle, not the length of the shaft. Thicker handles apply more torque.

One reason for length is for ease of driving. The longer the shaft, the less error effect your hand motions have on how well it fits in the slot or recess. As well you can reach deep in to crowded spaces and still have your hand able to turn the shaft from well away.

Stubbies are the most difficult to keep in the recess, and the most likely to get your knuckles skinned, and have little reach.

An ideal setup has stubbies, 6 inch shafts and 12 or more inch shaft. I always choose the longest of mine I can get away with.
Here's a practical answer for you.

Stubby screw drivers are better suited for cramped spaces and precision work. Longer screwdrivers are better for most other jobs, they are generally more comfortable to use, can fit into the narrower openings often found in DIY and mechanical jobs, and actually give you a clearer line of sight when lining up the screw/bolt/machine screw (sounds stupid yes, but actually true).

hope that helps
