What's the best protective coating for decking around a swimming pool - oil or wax - or can you use both?

You can use a Thompson water seal or equivalent, some come with a color if your wood is cedar. This is a good wood protectant against water and outdoors. I would think that wax would cause a slippery serface and may cost more.
