Water leaked into air ducts- what do we do?
Question:Our toilet backed up and flooded our bathroom. The water ran into the floor vent and flooded the air ducts. The ducts are insulated. Will the whole duct system have to be replaced? Or can it just be treated to prevent mildew? What do we do?!
Answers:
first make sure your toilets problem is fixed, then thats the time you can address your duct.
if you think it (duct) is really flooded with water then you have to check for moisture or water content in your duct insulation. by checking, you have to physically check it inch by inch. if it is flooded, you must remove its insulation then treat the ducts. i think the flooding is not that worse so you don't have to replace the duct system. just treat it with primer.
its not an easy job so better pay extra for labor than consuming your precious time doing the job.
Pitel is probably right.
I had a similar thing at one of my customers home where they had a leak in there underground plumbing under there slab house. In the winter they didn't have any trouble with smell or anything like that because the heat and the fan evaporated the water.
But in the summer there house always had a musty smell to it and every once in awhile a sewer type smell. I found the leak and fix it and that was that. I didn't see any need of replacing the duct in my situation.
So it's up to you but you may want to try running your blower on your furnace to evaporate the water. That is probably what I would do but that's me.
call a company in to do a duct cleaning tell them the problem I used to do them they can suck the water out and check your ducts plus they can spray a sanitizer to help with mold and odors just remember you get what you pay for dont skimp on the price most companys equipment doesnt do very well or the person isnt trained very well call a company that only does cleanings thats your best bet
