What's wrong with my home air conditioner?

Question:I just turned on my A/C at home for the first time this season. I'm in Northern California and the home is four years old. There is a heat pump outside and furnace in the attic.

When I turned it on today, the fan in the attic worked fine, but the heat pump won't come on. I've checked and reset the circuit breakers, which is the extent of my electrical knowledge.

Should I call an HVAC person, or does it sound like something I can diagnose and repair? Remember that I know very little (read: none) about electricity or HVAC systems.

Answers:
If you've checked and reset the breakers, you've done all that you can with your training/knowledge. Recheck the thermostat and ensure that it is set for cooling, and the thermostat is set cooler than your room temperature. If the outdoor unit does not come on within five minutes, call the pro.

It could have some corrosion on some contact points inside the main body of the outside unit. I Would call the ac guy.
double check everything and call for qualified person to check
you either have a heat pump or ac/furnace set up, not both. If you hear the fan on in the attic but not the outdoor unit, there could be several reasons as to why. It could be a pressure switch(safety) that has opened, low pressure switch and hi pressure switch. You may have lost power all together to the outdoor unit, check breakers, fuses at disconnect etc. If you dont feel comfortable with electricity you probably should not even touch it, call a service tech to look at it, besides, if a breaker was tripped or fuses blown, or a pressure switch open, it happened for a reason and it will likely need some type of repair. good luck to you.
