On central air conditioner..when it is 80 in your house and not cool at all do we need freon ?

Question:I also smell an odor...my husband doesn't so you know how that is...all shades are pulled and have ceiling fans plus floor fans going...can any one enlighten me on this problem?

Answers:
Could be a frozen evaporator, the coil near the furnace, check that, if frozen, turn off system for at least a half hour. If that is okay, time for a pro to look at it.

First, make sure you have a clean filter. It can't cool air that won't go through a dirty filter. Next, check for a possible frozen coil. Most home AC compressors are hermetically sealed so if that died you just have to replace it. Could also be low refrigerant level or bad thermal expansion valve.
