What are purlin struts?
Question:i had a home inspection done and the inspector noted that he found improperly installed purlin struts and that purlin struts should terminate to load bearing walls , what needs to be done to fix this?
Answers:
A purlin is a diagonal member used to support a roof rafter so that a smaller dimension of rafter can carry a larger roof load. Such as a longer span than that rafter would normally carry or heavier roofing, such as tile . A purlin by code must terminate to a load bearing structure as its purpose is to help transfer the load of roof down to the foundation. Purlins must also be installed at an angle no greater than 45 degrees to the perpendicular. Some possible solutions would be to move the purlin so it meets the above criteria or add more rafters to carry the load.. A good framing carpenter can help you with this or, if you are a do it yourselfer, a structural engineer can design it for you. Good luck!
Purling struts here in N.C. as I am thinking is only blocks placed between each stud,to strengthen the structure. This is done with a new house or new addition. Thay are placed about half the distance from the floor to the ceiling.Start by measuring this distance, snap a chalk line.this is the center of the wall.Cut one block the length between the studes, nail this block say above the line, the next block will go below the line and so forth all the distance you need. I am hopeing that no sheetrock has been put up,if it has it's to late for that.I am hopeing it is a new home.
