I have an 8-9 yr. old Amana range, the oven igniter starts to glow but the oven burner will not light?

Check with Amana. My parents bought one seven years ago and it did the same thing. They called Amana and they said there was a recall on the model they had. They sent someone out to fix a valve that was faulty free of charge. Don't know if you have the same problem but it sounds like you might.
Your range could have a glow plug (igniter) problem even though it is glowing. It's not getting hot enough. The cheapest route would be to replace the ignitor and then the oven valve.

its more than likely the gas safety valve. i have worked in maintenance for 8 yrs and replace several of these. when bad they wil not allow gas to pass though valve to get to the ignitor.
