Anyone know any home remedies for freshening the sink and garbage disposal?

Question:Our sink and mostly the garbage disposal has had kind of a rank smell lately. I thought I heard something once about using lemons but I'm not sure. Anyone have any home remedies they can share?

Answers:
Try putting some ice, a little cold water and lemon or orange peels in the disposal. The peels will freshen the smell and the ice will clean and sharpen the blades. (I have also put a small handful of whole cloves in with the ice and that works alright as well)

You probably did this as a child, but if you pour baking soda down your drain and wash it down with white vinegar, it will foam up alot and really neutralize the odors in you pipes. I remember when cereal boxes had little plastic volcanoes in them and thats what you did to make them erupt....nevertheless, you can also buy garbage disposal cleaner to pour down the drain, but from experience I can tell you that it will not work as well.
You can use any citrus peels, or if they are not handy - a box of baking soda will leave the disposal smelling "neutral".
Sometimes I put a half cup or more of baking soda in the drain and let it sit for 10 minutes, then run the hot water for a minute. Also, lemons are good for smelly drains. Squeeze 2 slowly as you circle the drain. Don't run the water after this.
Lemons do work. Turn your disposal on and put a few lemons down there. Also the powder that you put on the carpet you can use too, along with baking soda. FYI you can put ice down your disposal to sharpen the blades. Hope this helps.
Raw Meat smells, - - rotting vegetables not so. Probably need to flush it out more so. Try white vinegar. That is an odor eater.
bleach and water pour ndown flush with more water til u can not smell odour
This isn't a home remedy but I used Clorox Anywhere and it worked wonders on my sink smell. For some reason it was rank for a few days so I sprayed about 10 sprays in the drain and within minutes the stench was gone. It isn't toxic, you can check on it at http://www.clorox.com/innovations_anywhe...
mathew c had the best answer ( NOTE DO NOT USE BLEACH IF YOU HAVE A SEPTIC TANK SYSTEM)
Baking Soda and vinegar.
This will help unclog your drains too.
Question do you have a septic system?
Because if you do it might be gas baking up from the tank and not the drain at all that would be caused be improper ventilation.
:-)
Ice cubes and a quartered lemon--grind it up good and sprinkle baking soda in afterwards---do once or twice a month and never put greasy food scraps in the sink. Try a pot of boiling water once in a while too.make sphagetti .
Here's what I do:
1. Grind a tray of ice cubes through the disposal
2. use some peeling from any citrus fruit, lemon. lime, orange or grapefruit.
3. Take the splash guard out and scrub it clean. (you'll be surprised how gross it is.)
You can also use some baking soda and vinegar
Use Ice to clean and sharpen the blades and yes lemon or orange peel will help with the odor.
