Home A/C not working but fan is.?
Question:I have a two story home one unit for each floor, today my upstairs unit was not cooling. I could hear the fan indoors going and I could barely feel some coolness trying to make it through but the unit outside was not working. One was but the other wasn't. I checked the circuit box outdoors and everything is fine, I was cutting the lawn for about an hour and never saw it pop on, the other one however was going on and off. The filters are only about 10 days old, does anyone have any ideas of where I could start trouble shooting? The home and units are only 3 yrs old they are Aire-Flo Model 12 units.

It may be that the compressor needs to be replaced in the unit, which means you would have to call an A/C and Heating company to come out and replace it. Get an estimate first to see if the unit is worth fixing or replacing all together. It can be costly, so shop around and get referrals.
Since you mentioned that it's a three year old unit, it probably is worth fixing, and it really does sound like it's the compressor, the more I read your question. The filters should be fine, and wouldn't have anything to do with the unit mechanically.
As far as the refrigerant that may also need to be refilled, if it's low and the unit is not blowing out cold air. You can only purchase that product/chemical if you carry a special license. Not just anyone can go to a store and purchase it. It's only available in specialty stores, and the buyer has to have his license on file with that store.
An A/C technician will measure the amount of refrigerant that is necessary, and charge anywhere from $10.00-$20.00 a pound to refill. For measuring, the technician will use a special meter to measure the output of refrigerant, and determine its' necessary poundage for replacement.
I hope this information is of value to you. Good luck and try to keep cool!
I believe you are talking about the Split AC's. if it is so, then please check your compressor's fluid in the compressor. If that fluid is low, it won't cool the room (that is the main ingredient in cooling the room). Since you changed the filters recently, that shouldn't be a cause of your problem and now you are only left with the compressor's fluid.
So Good Luck..
I just went through this . turns out my problem is probably the programmable thermostat, which is only 5 years old. You may also want to check the freon on the non-functional unit. Good Luck.
For some reason, your A/C compressor is not turning on. It may be an ice build-up on your evaporator coil that is insulating the thermostatic bulb so the compressor is not getting a start signal. This is indicative of a low refrigerant charge. It is also possible that the charge is so low that the pressure switch is not activating the compressor. Those are the quick, easy items. You'll still need to contact a repairman to troubleshoot the system.
You want to start at your main breaker panel. If all you have is the two systems you mentioned, you should have four seperate breakers. two for your air hanlders, and two for your outdoor units. Check there first.
If all the breakers are on, and the outdoor unit still doesn't run, check outside to see if there is a disconnect box mounted to the wall next to the air condtioner.
This is either going to have another breaker in it, or fuses. reset the breaker or replace the fuses. If this doesn't work- call an HVAC company to come check it out.
if the outside unit is not running possible problems are...1 bad contactor...2 low pressure freon switch has unit locked out...3 bad capacitor...4 no electricity to outside unit, check breaker...5 high pressure switch knocked...there could be a red reset button on unit where lines come out of unit.if this switch knocked it means your fan on outside unit is bad...you should call serviceman if you dont have tools or knowledge to do troubleshooting and checking yourself...
you can puchase a new one
