Panel box question?
Question:We are flipping a house and the panel box has those old screw in fuses. One electrician wanted $1750.00 to update to a new one and that is not really in our budget. Why can't we just take out the panel box and clamp all of the wires for the house to the big wires coming into the house? I could save a ton of profit and if the new owners preferred a new panel box they could have it installed later.

You absolutely must have some kind of fuse or breaker system. Aside from being able to cut power to circuits to work on them or in case of emergency, there would be an extreme risk of causing a fire, especially with old wiring. Besides being a serious code violation, you would never get an insurance company to even think about insuring the thing, a bank would not loan money to a potential buyer.
How exactly would you do this without killing yourself? What would you do if you needed to change a light fixture or an outlet?
If your power supplier were to find out about this, they would cut your power. No questions, just cut.
How could you not have budgeted for this? $1750 really doesn't sound bad for this kind of job. There is a risk with flipping, especially if you have no clue what you are doing. Pay the electrician. Grin and bear this one, mark it as a lesson learned. Put it in the budget next time.
Now way. Your asking for trouble. How did you get insurance on the house with a fuse panel anyway. Get a few quotes and do it the right way.
No you can't do that! Most likely torch the house & occupants! The fuses work the same as breakers. If something get's overloaded it trips the breaker or a fuses burns out without them the wires burn instead.
Hire an electrician.call around and get quotes.
Depending on the area you live, you might have to get a permit and have an electrician do the work . Especially if you are going to sell it and want to pass inspection. My husband is an inspector.
You're kidding, right? $1750 won't even get you a decent coffin. If not kidding, the fire dept. and building inspector won't find it funny, either.

Just leave the screw ins. You got screwed, just pass it along to the next flipper.
i would say you have a DUMB ELECTRICIAN for not educating you on whats the effect of what your trying to do with your house.

My husband says you're the stupidest person on the face of the earth. He says it's not up to code and you can't just clamp your house wires to the wires coming into the house... you have to have a panel with fuses so that if someone was to say drop a radio into the bathtub, it wouldn't shock the sh!t out of them.
$1750.00 is outrageous, you should shop around and find someone that's not trying to screw you.

Oh, and that price is a little high if the box is easily accessible (like in a basement on the wall). Now if it's on the exterior buried in stucco or siding, yeah, it's a good price.
I wonder if your budget is so tight why are you concerned with the panel replacement. Leave it as is. If you slice the wires your going to fail your home inspection. the screw in style are still OK but will need up graded, but it does not have to be you who does it. If you start wiring around the fuses YOUR going to be the one that fixes the problem before it will close.
Patiently ,you need cut the power before come in to panel
There should be one main breaker before power go to main panel .Then you most be a very good electrician that wire-up panel service wires in to breakers without any mistake.Will tell you step by step but i will charge you.
